Has your coffee or tea habit stained or dulled the color of your teeth? Do you want to restore a gorgeous sparkle to your smile? You have a few options. You could spend weeks wearing over-the-counter white strips. Scrubbing with a whitening toothpaste is another option. Or, you could schedule professional whitening treatment with Dr. Alan Grodin, and recapture a brilliant white smile in less time than you thought possible. The choice is yours!
What Type of Stains Can Teeth Whitening Improve?
It’s easy to assume that a yellow or stained smile is always the result of poor oral hygiene. But while it’s true that lackadaisical brushing and flossing can cause the teeth to yellow, there are many other factors that can cause tooth stains.
For example, regularly consuming beverages like coffee, tea, red wine or cola is a very common cause of stained or dull teeth. Using tobacco is also likely to stain teeth.
Many people notice their teeth yellowing or becoming duller due to normal tooth wear and the effects of the aging process. Over time, the white outer layer of tooth structure (enamel) gets thinner and wears away to reveal the underlying dentin layer. Dentin is naturally yellower than enamel.
These types of stains, called extrinsic stains, typically respond well to teeth whitening treatment. In contrast, teeth whitening is less effective on intrinsic stains, or stains that are inside the tooth. Intrinsic stains may occur due to trauma to the tooth, exposure to too much fluoride as a child, and the use of tetracycline antibiotics (either taken by a mother during the second half of her pregnancy or taken by a child under the age of 8).
Dr. Grodin uses the Zoom! in-office whitening system to brighten patients’ smiles quickly and conveniently.
Prior to treatment, a protective covering is placed over the lips and gums. The powerful Zoom! bleaching gel is applied evenly to the teeth, and a special light is used to activate the hydrogen peroxide in the bleaching gel. The hydrogen peroxide creates a chemical reaction that breaks apart the carbon bonds that cause stains. Once this occurs, the teeth no longer look as yellow or dull. A Zoom! treatment can lighten teeth up to 10 shades in an hour.
Zoom! works best on teeth that do not have fillings, bonding or other dental restorations, as the bleaching gel only whitens tooth enamel. If you have dental work on your front teeth, talk to Dr. Grodin about alternative solutions to achieve a bright, white and even-looking smile.
Maintaining Your Newly Brightened Smile
After your Zoom! treatment, Dr. Grodin will give you detailed instructions for caring for your bright, white teeth. In general, you should practice good oral hygiene habits and avoid staining foods or beverages (i.e., anything that could stain a white shirt) for a few days after treatment.
You may also elect to follow up your professional treatment with the use of take-home trays customized to the contours of your mouth. You can use the trays periodically to maintain your beautiful smile.
